Sabar Institute

A Space for Social Cohesion and Community Empowerment

Founded by a group of passionate social science researchers and academicians, the institute is committed to using evidence-based research and community engagement to address pressing social challenges.

Registered as a trust under the Trust Act of West Bengal, SABAR brings together economists, researchers, and senior social scientists who believe that rigorous research and data-driven policy interventions can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society. The institute works to strengthen representation and access in areas such as education, employment, governance, and public services.

Building Bridges, Building Lives

01

Data Driven Research

Research forms the groundwork of all our projects. We continuously engage in publishing surveys, interviews, academic papers and reports. We currently have multiple research projects on socio-economic conditions of minorities and their representation in policy and other domains.

Know Your Neighbour

Although SABAR is the registered trust, people know us more through one of our proudest initiatives, the “Know Your Neighbour” campaign, which promotes social harmony by encouraging interaction between different communities. You can learn more about this campaign at knowyourneighbour.in. Drawing on the experiences of  neighbourhood walks, KYN had launched a research project titled ‘Neighbourhood Narratives’. This project aims to study and document the diversity and rich history of several culturally significant yet often overlooked neighbourhoods in Kolkata.

Youth Mentoring Program

The Youth Action for Better Lives initiative focuses on strengthening civic participation, social awareness, and youth leadership through sustained community engagement. Youth leaders and youth groups associated with the programme will regularly undertake a range of community-based activities aimed at addressing local social issues and improving access to opportunities and entitlements.

Chair For The Reader

Our 'Chair for the Reader' in Kidderpore invites curious minds to explore diverse perspectives. We offer a haven for learning with overlooked texts and new research that inspire critical thinking. Through storytelling sessions and book talks, we cultivate thoughtful dialogue in Kolkata and aim to replicate this across West Bengal. Launched by Amartya Sen.
